The Republic was written by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato around 380 BC. It is a Socratic dialogue exploring justice politics and the ideal state. In it Plato describes philosopher-kings as ideal rulers and presents the Allegory of the Cave a foundational concept in philosophy and political thought.
