Fluorescent light bulbs use mercury vapor which emits ultraviolet light when electrically excited. The UV light then strikes a phosphor coating on the inside of the bulb converting it to visible light. Mercury is a toxic heavy metal which is why proper disposal of fluorescent lamps is essential.
