Before the Prophet's Hijra the city of Madinah was known as Yathrib. After the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) migrated there in 622 AD it was renamed Madinat-ul-Nabi (City of the Prophet) commonly shortened to Madinah. The name change symbolized the city's new spiritual significance as the center of the emerging Islamic state and civilization.
