Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khawarizmi (780-850 AD) was an Islamic mathematician and scholar whose work Al-Kitab Al-Mukhtasar fi Hisab Al-Jabr wal-Muqabala (The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing) laid the foundations of algebra. The word algebra itself comes from Al-Jabr in his title and the word algorithm comes from his Latinized name.
