Bahadur Shah Zafar was the last Mughal emperor of India. He ruled from 1837 to 1857 and is also remembered as a distinguished Urdu poet. After the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British deposed him, ended the Mughal Empire, and exiled him to Rangoon (now Yangon, Myanmar), where he spent the rest of his life.
